Electric Fence vs Mesh Fence for Cattle — Pros and Cons

It's one of the most common debates in any rural supply store: should you run electric or mesh for cattle? The honest answer is that both have their place, and the smartest operators use a combination. Here's how they compare across the things that actually matter.

ELECTRIC FENCING — THE BASICS

Electric fencing uses one or more strands of conductive wire or tape, energised by a battery, solar, or mains-powered energiser unit. The wire delivers a short, sharp shock (high voltage, low amperage — uncomfortable but not dangerous) when an animal touches it while grounded.

For cattle, a typical electric fence uses 2-3 strands of polywire, HT smooth wire, or electrified tape on insulated posts spaced 10-15m apart.

MESH FENCING — THE BASICS

Mesh fencing (hinged joint or fixed knot) is a physical barrier that doesn't rely on electricity. The mesh itself, combined with star pickets and strainer assemblies, prevents stock from passing through by being physically in the way.

COST COMPARISON

Electric fencing is significantly cheaper to install:

  • Materials: approximately $0.80-$1.50/m (wire, posts, insulators)
  • Energiser: $200-$800 depending on length and power source
  • Total for 1km: approximately $1,200-$2,300

Mesh fencing with standard cattle mesh:

  • Materials: approximately $4.30-$4.50/m
  • Total for 1km: approximately $4,300-$4,500

Electric is roughly one-third to one-half the cost of mesh for materials. That's a significant difference, especially over long runs.

EFFECTIVENESS

Here's where it gets nuanced.

Electric is highly effective — when it's working. Trained cattle respect electric fences absolutely. A single strand of hot wire will hold cattle that wouldn't dream of touching it. The key phrase is "when it's working."

Electric fences fail when:

  • The energiser battery dies (solar panels get dirty, batteries age)
  • Vegetation touches the wire and earths it out
  • A branch falls on the wire
  • The grounding system is inadequate (common on dry, sandy soils)
  • Wire breaks and nobody notices for days

When an electric fence fails, it's just a piece of string. Cattle learn quickly that it's dead and walk through it.

Mesh fencing works 24/7 regardless of power, weather, or vegetation. A properly built mesh fence with barbed wire on top doesn't have an off switch. It's a permanent physical barrier that requires no ongoing power supply.

MAINTENANCE

Electric fencing requires constant attention:

  • Weekly fence line checks for vegetation contact
  • Regular battery/solar panel checks
  • Fault finding when the voltage drops
  • Replacing insulators that UV-degrade over time
  • Weed control along the wire run

Mesh fencing is largely set-and-forget:

  • Annual inspection for loose clips or mesh damage
  • Occasional retensioning after major stock events
  • Repairing any roo or flood damage
  • Strainer assembly checks every few years

Over 20 years, the maintenance hours on electric fencing far exceed mesh, and the maintenance on mesh is mostly one-off repairs rather than ongoing routine.

LONGEVITY

A well-built mesh fence lasts 25-40 years with minimal intervention. The mesh and wire are galvanised, the heavy pickets don't corrode quickly, and the strainer assemblies (if properly built) are good for decades.

Electric fencing components last 7-15 years. Polywire degrades in UV, insulators crack, energisers wear out, and battery systems need replacement. You'll rebuild an electric fence 2-3 times in the lifespan of one mesh fence.

BEST USES FOR ELECTRIC

  • Temporary paddock subdivision and strip grazing
  • Training young cattle to respect fences before turnout on mesh paddocks
  • Adding a hot wire to protect existing mesh from stock pressure
  • Internal laneway fencing where cattle are only passing through
  • Rapid subdivision for rotational grazing programs
  • Budget-limited temporary fencing while saving for mesh

BEST USES FOR MESH

  • All boundary fences (legal obligation, permanent barrier)
  • Paddocks holding bulls or cattle in season
  • Any fence you can't check regularly (remote paddocks)
  • Containment of unfamiliar or newly purchased cattle
  • Properties with unreliable power or in areas with frequent storms
  • Mixed grazing where sheep and cattle share fencing

For boundary fences and any permanent paddock: mesh every time. The higher upfront cost is offset by decades of reliable, maintenance-free containment.

For internal divisions, strip grazing, and temporary work: electric is smart and cost-effective.
