Electric fencing or mesh? Compare the operating job as well as the build
The right comparison includes how the fence is checked and kept working. An electric system and a physical mesh barrier have different dependencies; neither should be judged only by its first material total.
The short answer
Compare suitable complete systems for the animals and location. Include power, testing, vegetation and fault response for electric fencing; physical condition, tensioned components and ground/gate continuity for mesh. Some designs combine them.

Match the choice to your management capacity
Ask who will test and inspect the fence, how often the location is visited and what happens after a fault. A remote boundary that is rarely checked is a different operating task from an internal system managed every day. Do not assume an electric fence is functioning because the wire looks intact.
A physical mesh fence also needs inspection. A damaged latch, fallen branch or washed-out bottom edge can matter even if most of the wire looks good. Compare the real maintenance tasks rather than calling one option maintenance-free.
Make the cost scope comparable
Initial scope
Fence materials, supports, assemblies, gates, installation and complete power/testing equipment where required.
Operating scope
Testing, vegetation management, energy, inspection, repairs and the planned response to a fault.
Do not use a generic percentage claim for how much cheaper one system is. Obtain quotes for designs that meet the same brief and make omitted equipment or work visible. An electric offset added to mesh is a combined design, not evidence that the original physical fence can be left defective.
