THE OUTBACK PICKET

BUILT THE WAY THEY USED TO BE

Over the years, the industry quietly dropped the weight of pickets to cut costs. Farmers noticed. We went back to old-school specs — 2.1 kg/m, low-carbon virgin steel, full bitumen dip. The way your grandfather's pickets were made.

Note: "Star Picket" is a registered trademark of Waratah Fencing. That's why we call ours the Outback Picket.

🏭 THE PICKET — A 100-YEAR AUSTRALIAN ICON

From BHP Newcastle to Outback in Orange

1926
Rylands Brothers (Australia) patent the star picket in Newcastle, NSW. Invented by American rolling mill engineers William Todhunter & Howard Slater, specifically recruited for the project.
1930s — 1990s
BHP acquires Rylands Brothers. Pickets are manufactured at the Newcastle Steelworks from virgin Australian mild steel — low carbon content for maximum ductility. These are the legendary "BHP pickets" that farmers still talk about — heavy, tough, and built to bend, never snap.
1999 — 2010s
Newcastle Steelworks closes (1999). The brand passes through OneSteel → Arrium → Liberty/InfraBuild. Over the years, the industry collectively drops the weight of pickets to cut costs. Today's "standard" at 1.86 kg/m is a shadow of the original BHP heavyweights. Farmers notice and aren't happy.
2024 — NOW
Outback Fencing in Orange, NSW goes back to old school. While everyone else was racing to the bottom on weight and price, we went the other way: 2.1 kg/m heavy-duty Outback Pickets made from low-carbon virgin steel, full bitumen dip. Built the way they used to be.

WHY FARMERS CHOOSE THE OUTBACK PICKET

We went back to old-school specs because that's what actually works

💪
2.1 KG/M — OLD SCHOOL HEAVY
The industry dropped the standard to 1.86 kg/m. We went the other way — the kind of weight your grandfather's pickets had.
🔬
LOW CARBON VIRGIN STEEL
Under 0.15% carbon, rolled from virgin steel — no recycled scrap with tramp elements that cause cracking and brittleness.
❄️
WON'T SNAP IN THE COLD
Low-carbon steel stays ductile in cold weather. It bends under impact, never snaps — even on the coldest mornings.
🛡️
FULL BITUMEN DIP OR HDG
Every bitumen picket is fully dipped — not sprayed. Galvanised pickets are hot-dip galvanised for maximum protection.
📏
PRE-DRILLED HOLES
All holes pre-drilled along the full post. Compatible with clips, ties, and electric fencing accessories. Standard 8mm diameter.
